“The Rendezvous” by Darius M. Ratcliff, December 8, 1944

"He Descended to the Dead"  He Descended to the Dead , Ephesians 4: 8 – 10

THE RENDEZVOUS

I hear bewitching music;

I hear light laughter gay:

The lights of play halls sparkle

Along the night’s white way:

  But I’ve a rendezvous,

                        a rendezvous with death.

I see the gold that glitters,

And men who wield its power;

They strut the world in triumph

Through one brief shining hour:

But I’ve a rendezvous,

                        a rendezvous with death.

I hear great names recorded

Of bards and scientists;

The heroes wear their medals

Upon their buldging breasts:

But I’ve a rendezvous,

                        a rendezvous with death.

I hear the Christmas story

Of God who came to earth;

How death was robbed of power

Through that one holy birth:

  Christ had a rendezvous,

                        a rendezvous with death.

O Christ I love thee only.

I’ll serve thee from this hour;

For thou hast met the conqueror

And shorn him of his power:

Thine was the rendezvous,

            the rendezvous with death.
